CELEBRATING THE FATHER OF THE HYMN

Methodist Central Hall Westminster held a memorable service on Sunday 14th July 2024 to mark the 350th birthday of the renowned hymn writer Isaac Watts. This special occasion was recorded by the BBC for broadcast at a later date, allowing audiences nationwide to partake in this significant celebration.

Isaac Watts, often hailed as the 'Father of English Hymnody,' has left an indelible mark on Christian worship through his prolific hymn writing. His timeless hymns, including 'Joy to the World,' 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,' and 'O God Our Help in Ages Past,' have resonated with generations of believers and continue to be sung across the world.

The service featured an inspiring selection of these cherished hymns, performed by an augmented Great Hall Choir. This unique choir was enhanced by enthusiastic amateur singers from across London, coming together to pay tribute to Watts' enduring legacy. The music was expertly directed by Gerard Brooks, with the esteemed Andrew Furniss on the organ, ensuring a powerful and moving musical experience.

Adding a dramatic touch to the service, actor Tony Jasper brought to life key moments from Isaac Watts' life. His engaging performance offered the congregation and viewers an intimate glimpse into the life of the great hymn writer, making the service both educational and emotionally resonant.

The service at Methodist Central Hall Westminster not only celebrated Isaac Watts' remarkable contribution to hymnody but also served as a reminder of the power of music in worship and the unity it brings to the Christian community.
